About the Albanian Alphabet
The Albanian alphabet uses the Latin script with 36 letters, including 7 digraphs (dh, gj, ll, nj, rr, sh, th, xh, zh) that represent single sounds. The alphabet was standardized in 1908 at the Congress of Manastir. Albanian is the only surviving member of its branch of Indo-European languages.
History
The Albanian alphabet was standardized in 1908 at the Congress of Manastir, ending a period when Albanian was written in various scripts including Greek, Arabic, and Cyrillic. The current Latin-based alphabet was chosen to unify Albanian speakers and promote literacy. It has remained largely unchanged since standardization.
