About the Amharic Alphabet
The Amharic alphabet uses the Ethiopic script (Fidel), an abugida writing system. Each of the 33 basic characters has seven forms representing different vowel sounds, creating a total of 231 characters. Amharic is the official language of Ethiopia and uses one of the oldest writing systems still in use.
History
The Ethiopic script evolved from the ancient Ge'ez script around the 4th century CE. It was originally used for the Ge'ez language and later adapted for Amharic and other Ethiopian languages. The script is written left to right and has remained relatively unchanged for centuries, making it one of the world's oldest continuously used writing systems.
