About the Assamese Alphabet
The Assamese script is a variant of the Eastern Nagari script, closely related to Bengali script. It consists of 11 vowels and 41 consonants. The script has some unique features including two additional letters (ৰ and ৱ) not found in Bengali. Assamese is the official language of Assam, India.
History
The Assamese script evolved from the Brahmi script through various intermediate forms. It developed alongside Bengali script from the Eastern Nagari script around the 11th century.
