About the Bashkir Alphabet

The Bashkir alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 42 letters, including nine letters unique to Bashkir (Ә, Ғ, Ҙ, Ҡ, Ң, Ө, Ҫ, Ү, Һ). Bashkir is a Turkic language spoken in Bashkortostan, Russia. The alphabet was designed to accurately represent Bashkir phonology.

History

Bashkir was written in Arabic script until 1928, when it switched to Latin. In 1940, during Soviet rule, it was changed to Cyrillic. The current Cyrillic alphabet was standardized with additional letters for sounds not found in Russian. The alphabet has remained stable since then.
