About the Belarusian Alphabet

The Belarusian alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 32 letters. It includes two letters unique to Belarusian: Ў (short U) and І (dotted I). The alphabet lacks several letters found in Russian (Ё, Щ, Ъ are rarely used). Belarusian is an East Slavic language closely related to Russian and Ukrainian.

History

The modern Belarusian alphabet was standardized in the early 20th century. It went through several reforms, with the current version established in 1933. The alphabet includes unique features like Ў, which represents a sound similar to English 'w'. The orthography has remained relatively stable since standardization.
