About the Bengali Alphabet
The Bengali script is an abugida used to write Bengali and Assamese languages. It is the fifth most widely used writing system in the world. The script has a distinctive horizontal line running along the tops of letters, similar to Devanagari.
History
Bengali script evolved from the Brahmi script through various intermediate forms including Gupta and Siddham scripts. The modern Bengali alphabet developed during the medieval period (10th-14th centuries) and was standardized in the 19th century during the Bengali Renaissance.
