About the Bulgarian Alphabet
The Bulgarian alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 30 letters. It is the official script of Bulgaria and was the first Slavic literary language. Unlike Russian, Bulgarian Щ is pronounced as 'sht' rather than 'shch', and Ъ represents a vowel sound. The alphabet is highly phonetic.
History
The Bulgarian alphabet evolved from the Glagolitic script created by Saints Cyril and Methodius in the 9th century. It was later replaced by the Cyrillic script, which was developed by their disciples. The modern Bulgarian alphabet was standardized in the 19th century with reforms removing some archaic letters.
