About the Chechen Alphabet
The Chechen alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 49 letters, making it one of the largest Cyrillic alphabets. It includes many letters with the palochka (ӏ) symbol and digraphs with soft sign (ь) to represent the complex consonant system of Chechen. Chechen is a Northeast Caucasian language.
History
Chechen was written in Arabic script until 1925, when it switched to Latin. In 1938, it was changed to Cyrillic. The current 49-letter alphabet was developed to represent Chechen's complex phonology, including ejective consonants. The alphabet has been refined over time to better represent the language.
