About the Dhivehi Alphabet

The Dhivehi alphabet uses the Thaana script, a unique writing system with 24 letters. It is written from right to left and uses vowel diacritics (fili) above or below consonants. Thaana is used exclusively for the Dhivehi language, the official language of the Maldives.

History

Thaana script was developed in the 16th-17th centuries, replacing earlier scripts like Dhives Akuru. The script's letters are derived from Arabic numerals and local symbols. Thaana became the official script of the Maldives and has remained relatively unchanged since its creation.
