About the Glagolitic Alphabet

The Glagolitic alphabet is the oldest known Slavic script, created by Saints Cyril and Methodius in 863 CE. It consists of 41 letters with unique, ornate shapes. The alphabet was used to translate the Bible into Old Church Slavonic and was the precursor to the Cyrillic alphabet. It remained in use in some areas until the 20th century.

History

Glagolitic was created in 863 CE by Saints Cyril and Methodius for their mission to Great Moravia. It was the first alphabet specifically designed for Slavic languages. The script was later largely replaced by Cyrillic, though it continued to be used in Croatia and some other regions until the early 20th century.
