About the Hungarian Alphabet
The Hungarian alphabet uses the Latin script with 44 letters, including digraphs (cs, dz, dzs, gy, ly, ny, sz, ty, zs) and letters with diacritics (á, é, í, ó, ö, ő, ú, ü, ű). Hungarian has unique double acute accents (ő, ű) not found in other languages. The alphabet is highly phonetic.
History
The Hungarian alphabet was standardized in the 19th century, based on Czech orthography. The unique double acute accent was introduced to distinguish long vowels. The current 44-letter alphabet has remained stable since standardization, making Hungarian spelling highly consistent and phonetic.
