About the Kannada Alphabet
The Kannada script is an abugida used to write Kannada, a Dravidian language spoken in Karnataka, India. It consists of 49 letters with distinctive rounded shapes. The script is one of the oldest in India and is closely related to Telugu script. Both evolved from the same ancient source.
History
Kannada script evolved from the Kadamba and Chalukya scripts around the 5th century CE, which themselves came from the Brahmi script. The modern rounded form developed around the 12th-13th centuries. The script has remained relatively stable since then, with minor reforms in the 20th century.
