About the Kyrgyz Alphabet
The Kyrgyz alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 36 letters, including three letters unique to Kyrgyz (Ң, Ө, Ү). Kyrgyz is a Turkic language spoken in Kyrgyzstan and uses a modified Russian Cyrillic alphabet. The alphabet was designed to represent Kyrgyz phonology accurately.
History
Kyrgyz was written in Arabic script until 1926, when it switched to Latin. In 1940, during Soviet rule, it was changed to Cyrillic. The current Cyrillic alphabet was standardized with additional letters for sounds not found in Russian. After independence, Kyrgyzstan has maintained the Cyrillic script.
