About the Lithuanian Alphabet
The Lithuanian alphabet uses the Latin script with 32 letters, including letters with diacritical marks. It features nasal vowels (ą, ę, į, ų) and special consonants (č, š, ž). Lithuanian is one of the oldest Indo-European languages and has preserved many archaic features in its alphabet and pronunciation.
History
The Lithuanian Latin alphabet was standardized in the 19th century, replacing earlier Gothic and Cyrillic scripts. The current alphabet was finalized in 1918 with Lithuanian independence. The alphabet includes unique features like nasal vowels and maintains distinctions lost in other Indo-European languages.
