About the Marathi Alphabet
The Marathi alphabet uses the Devanagari script, the same script used for Hindi and Sanskrit. Marathi includes one additional letter not commonly used in Hindi. The script is an abugida where consonants have an inherent vowel that can be modified with diacritical marks.
History
Marathi has been written in Devanagari script since the 13th century, though earlier Marathi was written in Modi script. The modern Marathi alphabet was standardized in the 19th and 20th centuries. The language has a rich literary tradition dating back over a thousand years.
