About the Odia Alphabet
The Odia script is an abugida used to write the Odia language, spoken in Odisha, India. It consists of 13 vowels and 36 consonants with distinctive rounded letter shapes. The script is derived from the Brahmi script and is closely related to Bengali and Assamese scripts.
History
The Odia script evolved from the Kalinga script around the 10th century CE, which itself came from the Brahmi script. The modern rounded form developed during the medieval period. The script was standardized in the 20th century and is one of the classical scripts of India.
