About the Portuguese Alphabet
The Portuguese alphabet uses the Latin script with 26 letters. It includes diacritical marks (acute, circumflex, grave, tilde, and cedilla) to indicate pronunciation and stress. Portuguese uses these marks on vowels (á, â, à, ã, é, ê, í, ó, ô, õ, ú) and the cedilla on c (ç). The alphabet is used for both European and Brazilian Portuguese.
History
The Portuguese alphabet evolved from the Latin alphabet during the Roman occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. The modern 26-letter alphabet was officially adopted in 2009 when K, W, and Y were added for use in foreign words and scientific terms. Diacritical marks have been part of Portuguese orthography since medieval times.
