About the Rohingya Alphabet

The Rohingya Hanifi alphabet was created in the 1980s specifically for the Rohingya language. It consists of 28 letters and is written from right to left. The script was designed to be distinct from both Arabic and Latin scripts while being easy to learn for Rohingya speakers.

History

The Hanifi script was created by Molana Hanif in the 1980s as a unique writing system for Rohingya. Before this, Rohingya was written in various scripts including Arabic, Urdu, and Burmese. The Hanifi script was added to Unicode in 2017, helping to preserve and promote Rohingya literacy.
