About the Romanian Alphabet
The Romanian alphabet uses the Latin script with 31 letters, including five special characters: ă, â, î, ș, and ț. Romanian is the only Romance language that uses these specific diacritics. The alphabet is phonetic, with each letter generally representing one sound.
History
Romanian was written in Cyrillic until the 19th century when it switched to Latin script. The modern alphabet was standardized in the mid-19th century. The letters ș and ț (with comma below) replaced the older forms with cedilla in 1993 to align with international standards.
