About the Sanskrit Alphabet
The Sanskrit alphabet uses the Devanagari script with 48 letters arranged in a highly systematic manner. Sanskrit is considered one of the oldest Indo-European languages and is the liturgical language of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. The alphabet is organized by place and manner of articulation.
History
Sanskrit was originally an oral language, with the alphabet developed later for written texts. The Devanagari script for Sanskrit evolved from the Brahmi script around the 11th century CE. The systematic arrangement of the alphabet reflects ancient Indian phonetic science (śikṣā). The script has remained largely unchanged for centuries.
