About the Siddham Alphabet

Siddham is an ancient Indian script that evolved from Brahmi around the 6th century CE. It was used primarily for writing Sanskrit Buddhist texts and was transmitted to China, Japan, and Korea along with Buddhism. The script is still used in some Buddhist rituals, particularly in Japan.

History

Siddham script developed in North India around the 6th-7th centuries CE. It was widely used for Buddhist texts and was brought to East Asia by Buddhist monks. While it fell out of use in India, it was preserved in Japan where it is still used for writing mantras and seed syllables (bīja) in esoteric Buddhism.
