About the Sinhala Alphabet
The Sinhala script is an abugida used to write Sinhala, the majority language of Sri Lanka. The script is characterized by its rounded letter shapes and is derived from the ancient Brahmi script. It is also used to write Pali, the liturgical language of Theravada Buddhism.
History
Sinhala script evolved from the Brahmi script around the 3rd century BCE. It developed through various intermediate forms including the Sinhala Prakrit inscriptions. The modern script took shape during the medieval period and has remained relatively stable since the 13th century, with minor reforms in the 20th century.
