About the Slovak Alphabet

The Slovak alphabet uses the Latin script with 46 letters, including many with diacritical marks. It features acute accents for long vowels (á, é, í, ó, ú, ý), carons for soft consonants (č, ď, ľ, ň, š, ť, ž), and special letters like ô and ä. The alphabet is highly phonetic.

History

The Slovak alphabet was standardized by Ľudovít Štúr in the 1840s as part of the Slovak national revival. It was based on Czech orthography but adapted for Slovak phonology. The current alphabet has remained largely unchanged since then, with minor reforms in the 20th century.
