About the Swedish Alphabet
The Swedish alphabet is based on the Latin alphabet with 29 letters. It includes three additional vowels (Å, Ä, Ö) that come after Z in the alphabetical order. These letters are not considered accented versions of A and O, but distinct letters with their own pronunciations. W was officially added to the alphabet in 2006.
History
The Swedish alphabet evolved from the Latin alphabet during the Christianization of Scandinavia. The letters Å, Ä, and Ö developed during the medieval period to represent sounds unique to Swedish. The modern 29-letter alphabet was standardized in the 20th century, with W officially recognized as a separate letter in 2006.
