About the Tagalog Alphabet
The modern Tagalog/Filipino alphabet consists of 28 letters, including the Spanish-influenced ñ and the indigenous digraph ng. The alphabet was expanded from the original 20-letter Abakada to include letters for foreign loanwords. Tagalog is the basis for Filipino, the national language of the Philippines.
History
Tagalog was originally written in Baybayin script before Spanish colonization. The Latin alphabet was introduced by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. The modern 28-letter alphabet was officially adopted in 1987, expanding the earlier 20-letter Abakada to accommodate foreign words.
