About the Tajik Alphabet

The Tajik alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 35 letters, including several letters unique to Tajik (Ғ, Ӣ, Қ, Ӯ, Ҳ, Ҷ). Tajik is a Persian language spoken in Tajikistan and uses a modified Cyrillic alphabet adopted during Soviet times. The alphabet is designed to represent Tajik phonology accurately.

History

Tajik was written in the Persian Arabic script until 1928, when it switched to Latin. In 1940, during Soviet rule, it was changed to Cyrillic. The current Cyrillic alphabet was standardized with additional letters for sounds not found in Russian. After independence, there have been discussions about returning to the Arabic or Latin script.
