About the Tatar Alphabet
The Tatar alphabet uses the Cyrillic script with 39 letters, including six letters unique to Tatar (Ә, Җ, Ң, Ө, Ү, Һ). Tatar is a Turkic language spoken in Tatarstan, Russia. The alphabet was designed to accurately represent Tatar phonology while maintaining compatibility with Russian Cyrillic.
History
Tatar was written in Arabic script until 1927, when it switched to Latin. In 1939, during Soviet rule, it was changed to Cyrillic. The current Cyrillic alphabet was standardized with additional letters for sounds not found in Russian. After the fall of the Soviet Union, there have been discussions about returning to Latin script.
