About the Tigrinya Alphabet
The Tigrinya alphabet uses the Ethiopic script (Fidel), an abugida where each of the 32 basic characters has seven forms representing different vowel sounds. This creates a total of 224 characters plus additional symbols. Tigrinya is spoken in Eritrea and northern Ethiopia and shares the script with Amharic.
History
The Ethiopic script evolved from the ancient Ge'ez script around the 4th century CE. Tigrinya adopted this script and has used it continuously for over 1,500 years. The script is one of the oldest writing systems still in active use and has remained relatively unchanged throughout its history.
