History

Turkmen was written in Arabic script until 1928, when it switched to Latin. In 1940, it was changed to Cyrillic during Soviet rule. After independence in 1991, Turkmenistan returned to a Latin-based alphabet in 1993, which has been in use since then with some modifications.
