About the Uyghur Alphabet
The Uyghur alphabet uses a modified Arabic script with 32 letters, including several letters unique to Uyghur for representing vowels. The script is written from right to left and includes letters not found in standard Arabic. Uyghur is a Turkic language spoken primarily in Xinjiang, China.
History
Uyghur has been written in various scripts throughout history, including Old Turkic runes, Arabic, Latin, and Cyrillic. The current Arabic-based alphabet was standardized in the 1980s. It includes modifications to represent Uyghur vowels, which are more numerous than in Arabic. The alphabet is based on the Chagatai script tradition.
